Al Groh and staff received 2 commitments over the weekend and Scout.com caught up with one of them in OL Gavin Smith. Inside Smith talks about his decision to commit to UVa.

Sticking true to his word, Gavin Smith came out of his official visit with Virginia with his college decision.

“I committed to Virginia,” said Smith. “I guess what made me decide on UVa is just the players – it was so cool hanging out with them and they all hung out together. [The team unity] was just different from anything that I’ve ever seen before.”

Smith, a 6-foot-4 265-pound lineman from Raleigh (N.C.) Wakefield, originally verbally committed to N.C. State during his junior season, but decided to decommit following his official visit to South Carolina last week.

For Wakefield, Smith played defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme, but is being recruited by Virginia to play a slightly different nose guard position in the 3-4 scheme.

“I’m ready for anything,” said Smith. “I’m going to do what I have to do to play. I know there will be some differences.”

This weekend Smith was scheduled to take an official visit to North Carolina, but has decided to cancel the trip.
