Saturday afternoon was a great day for the Virginia Cavaliers basketball program and for the Lett household in Mobile Alabama. The Hoos got the big men they coveted the most and Johnnie Lett had come to a decision as to where he'll play college basketball.

When Dave Leitao and his staff got hired, they were looking for some bulk up front. The Virginia head coach got his wish when B.C. Rain (Ala.) post player Johnnie Lett committed on Saturday night.

``It was the overall atmosphere,” said the 6-foot-8 ½, 220-pound Lett. “I really liked the coaching staff. They can really help me in a lot of different ways. I felt comfortable on my visit and I really wanted to play in the ACC.”

Lett is a big-time rebounder who plays hard and can also block shots. There’s no question he’ll need to become more assertive on the offensive end, but he was exactly what the Cavaliers needed.

Credit Virginia assistant Steve Seymour for helping to land the Mobile native.

Lett, who started the AAU season with a small AAU outfit before finishing with the Smyrna Stars, also considered Alabama, Georgia, South Alabama and Miami.

Lett, who has a 2.9 GPA and averaged 16 points and 15 boards last season, took an official visit to Virginia a few weeks back and took a little time to talk it over with his mother before making it official on Saturday.

``I really think I can help the team,” Lett said. “I feel that I can make an impact.
