"I committed to Virginia," said Smith. "I guess what made me decide on UVa is just the players – it was so cool hanging out with them and they all hung out together. [The team unity] was just different from anything that I've ever seen before."
Smith, a 6-foot-4 265-pound lineman from Raleigh (N.C.) Wakefield, originally verbally committed to N.C. State during his junior season, but decided to decommit following his official visit to South Carolina last week.
For Wakefield, Smith played defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme, but is being recruited by Virginia to play a slightly different nose guard position in the 3-4 scheme.
"I'm ready for anything," said Smith. "I'm going to do what I have to do to play. I know there will be some differences."
This weekend Smith was scheduled to take an official visit to North Carolina, but has decided to cancel the trip.
