2005 Signee Update: Antonio Appleby

Appleby was ranked as the 30th best defensive end recruit in the country by Scout.com.

Antonio Appleby, from Salem High School, was one of the top defensive ends on the east coast for the class of 2005. The four star prospect is ready for the challenge of a new position at the University of Virginia.

"The coaches have told me they are going to start me out at middle linebacker," said Antonio Appleby. "It's fine with me. It's not the position I was recruited as, but I had a lot of people telling me I would probably play another position in college. I played linebacker a little bit this past year for my high school team. I am ready for it."

Appleby stands 6-4, 240-pounds and will arrive on campus within the next month. "I will begin classes July 14th. I am getting ready to play. I am conditioning and running. I'm trying to prepare myself for fall practice. I hope I can see some time on the field this fall. It doesn't matter where I play, I just want to get in the game. I want to get the feel of the atmosphere and the difference in the game speed," Appleby said.

Appleby was ranked as the 30th best defensive end recruit in the country by Scout.com. He made numerous All-State teams as well. He said, "I made 2nd Team All-State, 1st Team All-Region, and 1st Team All-Tidewater. I am not sure what my stats were last year. That was a long time ago and it doesn't matter. I think my strengths are being very active around the ball and always trying to make big plays."

When asked about the Virginia Cavs Appleby replied, "We are going to have a good season. We have a lot of guys who can make plays. I was unable to attend the spring game, but I went down there for one of the practices. I thought they looked really good."
