Here is what UVa commit Patrick Slebonick had to say about UVa, the coaching staff, his chances on playing early, and his preparation for his final year of HS football.
Have you had a good summer so far?
“Yea, it’s been good. A lot of working out for football…we started two-a-days Monday so the summer is pretty much over.”
What type of season does your team expect to have?
“We got a lot of pressure on us, but the team is working real hard right now and taking a lot of steps. There is nothing NOT to be excited about right now.”
So are you excited about UVa?
“Definitely, I’m headed down there to watch practice on Sunday.”
What about UVa appealed to you the most?
“Well my coach had us do a lot of homework, because he predicted we’d get the offers, so me and Tony North knew everything about the different school’s academics. That’s the main reason I’d say, I love the opportunities there, including the law school.”
“I was real comfortable there and liked the coaches a lot. There is nothing more I could ask for. I can’t wait to get there, but right now I’m just trying to worry about winning some games in HS.”
What do you like most about the coaches?
“The coaches are great; I couldn’t say a bad thing about them. Coaching Prince is just great.”
“When you are on visits they make everyone with you feel welcome, and I’ve been to their practices…they are real hands-on in teaching. I mean even Coach Groh will jump in a drill.”
What have the coaches told you about playing time once you get to UVa?
“My understanding is that I’ll be red-shirted, but the coaches there are very honest with you and make it clear that anything can happen. So they can’t really guarantee me anything besides a scholarship.”
What are some things you hope to do to prepare for Virginia Football?
“Working to get faster and stronger…mentally I think I’m fine. But really I’m just working on getting faster and stronger.”
How much can you bench press?
“Only about 330 right now.”
What’s your 40 time?
“It varies, but usually I can get between 5.3 and 5.5. I did real bad at the Nike Combine though.”
“I was worried about the coaches not liking the time, but when I called them up a couple of weeks later they said nothing but good things about my performance at the camp. I guess they got good reports that Nike gives out.”
So do you plan on heading down to Charlottesville frequently next year?
“Yep. I’m going to go to as many home games as possible…take advantage of the unlimited unofficial visits. I’d say right now I’m getting close to 10 total visits down there.”
Did you go to any of the games last year?
“I went to the Florida State game and the Virginia Tech game there.”
