Coach Speak: Ricky DeBerry

Coach Speak: Ricky DeBerry

Sophomore linebacker Ricky Deberry has already become a household name in college football recruiting circles. St. Christopher's School (Richmond, Va.) head coach Michael Turner talks about what makes DeBerry such a special player.

Ricky DeBerry is one of the top sophomore college football prospects in Virginia.

DeBerrry's recruitment is beginning the pick up momentum. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker already has scholarship offers from North Carolina, Purdue, and Virginia. The St. Christopher's School star is also attracting interest from Alabama, Boston College, East Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Penn State, Tennessee, USC, and Virginia Tech.

According to his coach, Michael Turner, the attention is well deserved.

"Sometimes, you see kids and they have one defining characteristic," Turner said. "You can't say that about Ricky. There's no aspect of his game that isn't strong."

"He's big, strong, and fast. He also knows the game, is competitive, and wants to work hard. He really is the total package."

DeBerry's impact on the program cannot be overstated.

"He means many things," said Turner. "As a sophomore, he's stepped up to be critical part on the defensive side of the ball and will grow on the offensive side as well."

"Above all his physical contributions, he brings a lot of intensity and an expectation of success."

Outside the school, DeBerry is also generating a buzz.

"He's the kind of person that when he walks in the room -- people notice," Turner said. "It's not just because he's a big, strong guy -- it's his personality -- it's contagious. "

"We will regularly encounter folks who are excited to come to St. Christopher's and watch him play. That's nice because it garners attention for guys on campus that are working hard and are talented players, who otherwise may not get that kind of exposure."

Although it is extremely early in DeBerry's career, he may have the potential to play on Sunday.

"If we are going to have that conversation, it certainly makes sense for him to be in it," said Turner.

Expect DeBerry to be in the recruiting conversation a lot over the next few years.
